Held in the Blur

A photographic series exploring queer femininity, visibility, and the tension between vulnerability and defiance.

Narrative

Held in the Blur explores the space between being seen and protecting oneself. Faces blur and hands hide, reveal, or redirect the gaze. The portraits focus on moments where identity feels shifting or uncertain. Instead of presenting fixed ideas of femininity, the images sit in ambiguity where vulnerability, resistance, and self-expression can exist at the same time.

Inspiration

The series is informed by queer and feminist reflections on the gaze and how femininity is often interpreted or judged. It looks at the experience of being observed, scrutinised, or misunderstood, particularly for queer and gender-diverse people. The work also draws on photographic practices that use distortion, gesture, and fragmentation to question how identity is seen and represented.

Technical Details

The images are created using a mix of techniques during the shoot, including mirrors, fabrics, water, and other materials that partially obscure or distort the face and body. Some effects are created in camera, while others come from the physical setup of the scene. Hands and gestures play an important role, shaping or interrupting the gaze. The photographs are printed in black and white to emphasise contrast, intimacy, and emotional texture.

Queer Friendships

A participatory portrait series exploring queer friendship, intimacy, and connection.

Narrative

For many queer people, friendships can hold a central place in everyday life. These relationships often create spaces of belonging, intimacy, and mutual care, sometimes extending beyond conventional ideas of friendship. The series explores the many forms these connections can take within queer communities.

Inspiration

The project is informed by reflections on queer community and the ways friendships can become spaces of support, care, and shared experience. It also draws on documentary and portrait photography traditions that focus on relationships between people and moments of everyday connection.

Technical Details

The portraits are created in a simple studio setup with a neutral backdrop and minimal props. Friends are photographed together in small groups, allowing space for natural interaction and gestures of connection. The images are presented in black and white to emphasise expression, body language, and emotional presence.
